When is the Marine Corps Birthday?

The United States Marine Corps birthday is celebrated on November 10, the anniversary of its founding in Philadelphia by the Second Continental Congress in 1775. Two battalions of Marines were established under the leadership of Samuel Nicholas to serve on land and at sea during the Revolutionary War.

How do we celebrate the Marine Corps Birthday?

Starting in 1921, Marines have celebrated the anniversary of their founding with USMC Birthday Ball celebrations. While celebrations may differ, each one includes three distinctive features:

  • A reading of Marine Corps Order No. 47 (Series 1921), a letter from Major General John A. Lejeune, the Commandant of the Marine Corps in 1921. This letter commemorated the founding of the Corps and established a tradition for celebrating the day of recognition.

  • Ceremonial cake cutting, which symbolizes each Marine’s commitment to the Corps.

  • A reading of the Commandant’s Message, an annual letter from the Commandant of the Marine Corps to all Marines. This letter typically includes a reflection on the history of the Corps and a message of encouragement to all Marines.

What is Travis Manion Foundation’s Connection to the Marine Corps?

Travis 1

TMF is named after 1stLT Travis Manion, USMC, who gave the ultimate sacrifice on April 29, 2007. Travis and his fellow Marines were ambushed while searching a suspected insurgent house in the Al Anbar province of Iraq. As he led the counterattack against the enemy forces, Travis was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from his wounded teammates. His courageous acts allowed every member of his patrol to survive.

TMF is a community, led by veterans and families of the fallen but open to all, that serves together and supports each other. Inspired by his legacy of service, TMF volunteers embrace the five words that Travis said before his final deployment: “If Not Me, Then Who…”
