Cpl Jose A. Velez and Spc Andrew Velez
Cpl. Jose A. Velez, 23, of Lubbock, Texas, died Nov. 13, 2004 in Fallujah, Iraq, while clearing an enemy strongpoint when his unit came under fire. Velez was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas. Jose often went by “Freddy” and joined the U.S. Army in 2000 after graduating high school. Velez was in the infantry and deployed to Iraq in 2003. Freddy was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, and a Silver Star. Velez was survived by his wife, Nickie Velez, father, Roy Velez, sister, Monica Velez, and brother Andrew Velez.
“Freddy believed in his mission, often telling his father that most Americans only heard and saw the bad news, but what they didn’t see were children who could now go to school, families who now had access to water, and the Iraqis who were grateful for their freedom,” Melanie Burford wrote in The Dallas Morning News.
The Travis Manion Foundation provided a Challenge Grant to the Velez family and empowered them to run the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon in honor of their fallen loved ones.
Spc. Andrew Velez, 22, of Lubbock, Texas, died on July 25 in Sharona, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related injury. Velez was assigned to the Corps Support Battalion, Theater Support Command, Fort Irwin, Calif. Andrew joined the U.S. Army in 2002 after completing his GED and his wife had their third child. Andrew deployed to Iraq in 2003. In 2004, Andrew’s older brother, Cpl. Jose “Freddy” Velez was killed under enemy fire and Andrew escorted his body home. Then, Andrew deployed to Afghanistan in 2006 and signed on for six more years of service. He was survived by his daughter Jasmine, sons, Jordan and Jacob, his father, Roy Velez, and sister, Monica Velez.
“You always do it for your buddy next to you,” Roy Velez said about his son’s service.
The Travis Manion Foundation honored Spc. Andrew Velez with a Challenge Grant on Oct. 29, 2011, when Monica Velez, Andrew’s sister, ran in the Marine Corps Marathon to celebrate the lives of her brothers Andrew and Freddy. Their father, Roy Velez was able to accompany Monica to honor Andrew and Freddy and see Monica finish the marathon.
