Annual Manion WOD (Workout of the Day) Returns to Honor 18th Anniversary of Marine Fallen Hero 1stLt Travis Manion in April
The Manion WOD (Workout of the Day) returns once again this month to pay tribute to the courage, service, and sacrifice of 1stLt Travis Manion, USMC. Thousands of veterans, families of fallen heroes, and inspired civilians across the country will gather on Manion WOD weekend from April 26-28 to complete the workout ahead of the 18th anniversary of Travis' sacrifice on April 29, 2007.
Prior to saving the lives of his teammates in Fallujah, Iraq, Travis spent his entire life stepping up for others, serving as a leader, and putting his character first every day. Whether on the wrestling mat at the Naval Academy or leading Marines in Iraq, he thrived on pushing himself and those around him to be stronger, better, and more committed to something greater than themselves.
The Manion WOD was officially recognized as a CrossFit Hero WOD in 2011. The workout pays tribute to the date of Travis’ sacrifice with a 400-meter run and 29 back squats, repeated for 7 rounds. Although many complete it for time, the workout can also be scaled to body weight or completed with a partner, allowing those of various fitness levels to honor Travis and his legacy.
Registrants nationwide will unite at gyms, CrossFit boxes, with their ruck clubs and TMF Youth Clubs, or virtually from any location to complete the workout. No matter where or how it’s done, the heart of the Manion WOD remains the same: pushing personal limits to honor a hero’s legacy.
“These guys and gals have given all for others—you can give it all during the workout,” says Jimi Letchford, Travis’s classmate, and the creator of the Manion WOD.
All Manion WOD participants receive the official 2025 Manion WOD t-shirt, and participants in the rucking division will also earn the limited-edition patch. This year, the official t-shirt and patch pay tribute to Travis’ Marine battalion insignia.
